Q&A: I am looking to return to my old job that I left 6 months ago and don’t know how to phrase the email?

<strong>Question by Thomas K: I am looking to return to my old job that I left 6 months ago and don’t know how to phrase the email?
I left my old job in architecture that I had for 6 months for a new position in construction. This job in construction has also lasted 6 months, but it is not what I expected and is different from what I was told it would be. The job change was always gamble, and I am leaving on good terms. I left my old job on good terms as well, and am looking to try and begin discussions so I can return to it.

Don’t do it by email!!!!

Make an appointment with the hiring boss and go in and plead your case. Ask for the old job back. It’s a lot harder to deny someone sitting in front of you than it is to delete an email.

Also, be prepared to list the assets you can bring: you already know the job, the people, the firm, how they like to do business, you were a good worker, left on good terms, they don’t have to train a new person, and any others you can think of.

You did what you thought was best for you. Can’t argue with that. I wouldn’t send and e-mail though. I’d call and make an appointment with my old boss…swallow my pride….look him/her in the eye….and tell him/her your interested in coming back.

    Good Luck.
