Tub to shower remodel ideas?

<strong>Question by JoJo_8_Brooke: Tub to shower remodel ideas?
I am having my cast iron tub and acrylic surround removed and was planning on having a contractor build a double shower all tiled since I really don’t need the bath tub in that bathroom. My question is……after looking for pictures of what I have in mind I keep coming across articles that suggest everything but tile showers. They say that leaks and maintenance are problems with them. Does anyone have any suggestions for me?
I am having to do something because when I had my bathroom remodeled 3 years ago (all new tub/surround/tile floor/drywall/etc..) I hired a friends dad to do the job……huge mistake! Nothing was done correctly and now I have to replace the floor under the tub and walls due to leaks. I really like the look of open showers (no door or curtain) that are tile floor to ceiling. But I only have the amount of space that your standard bath tub takes up to work with. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Any ballpark on cost’s would also be great!

Well I can’t ball park the cost because I don’t know what tile selection you have made, how much of the sub floor you need to replace and other factors. I would tile the whole thing. It won’t leak if it’s done properly and should last for years. The other question is is the rest of the bathroom floor tile, vinyl, wood, laminate? You need to make sure that if you do a tile shower that the seams between the shower and the rest of the floor are sealed properly so your sub floor remains dry. Re-reading your question I assume the rest of the floor is tile.

I have seen showers that have incorporated a claw footed cast iron bathtub and an almost water closet shower that extends into and over the tub. A small 4″ lip and a drain under the tub retain the water in that location. That way you can have the shower and the tub with a different look, and still get the floor to ceiling tile job. A circular shower curtain keeps the water from going over the rim. So it’s just your shower you described with a claw-footed tub.

Just an idea
