Why are people trying to unconvince me from going back to school for nursing?

<strong>Question by Craig’s Angel: Why are people trying to unconvince me from going back to school for nursing?
I’m 24 years old and I’ve been in the real estate industry since 2003. I’m not fulfilled so I made a decision to make a career change and I’ve been accepted into the school of my choice, but everyone is saying that it’s so competitive that it scares me about job opportunities when I’m done. It’s due to the competition that others are trying to steer me away and I’ve also heard that some hospitals/departments are only hiring experienced nurses. I thought this was a good thing, since my program is accelerated (this is my 2nd bachelor’s degree). I chose this field, because I always want to be needed. Also, what makes me confused is that I always read articles that claim that there is a shortage of nurses? I know that I would just be placed where I don’t want to be, just to gain some experience. Like if I desired to work in Labor and delivery, I know I probably would not get what I wanted right away and that I would have to wait for an opportunity to open up like everyone else does.

I work for a national developer/home builder full time, but I also have a second employer. My second employer is one of the greatest hospitals in the world, Johns Hopkins Hospital and I think its a resource in my case. They have tuition reimbursement. Also, doctor’s and nurse’s have already asked me if I needed any letters of recommendations. I don’t as of yet, but it’s nice to know that I have their support. But, I also know if I get anywhere in life, it’s because of my efforts.

Are these people in the industry themselves or are they just talking? Nurses are always in demand all over the world and I know that in Dubai they are being paid so well that nurses are flocking there from everywhere.

Don’t listen to negativity. Follow your dreams.

OK, so the school is competitive. Since you have been accepted, you survived the completition at the application level and were chosen. That says they think you will succeed.

You seem to have a very realistic outlook on what you will encounter in the job market.

    Good luck.

Its competitive to get into nursing colleges because there aren’t a lot out there and their funding is limited. They’re also the worlock keepers of the good job market so they can be pompous azzholz about it. Get your RN, then don’t look back, people just like to talk.
